THE WORLD
Mystery Babylon, that Great City
by Steve Magill
____________________________________________________

Mystery Babylon has been a mystery to commentators since she was revealed to the Apostle John over 2000 years ago. The main reason for the confusion is in the interpretation of “that great city” as a city as we understand it and not seeing a city from God’s perspective.

The identification of Babylon as a “mystery” was first recorded in the book of Revelation. This identification makes her more than just “a city” among many cities upon the earth. If she was just one city among many, then her identification would be easy. She would of course be the city known as Babylon throughout Scripture; that word “mystery” sets her apart from all cities. Let’s look at how she is set apart throughout the book of Revelation.

SHE IS A GREAT CITY

The first mention of Babylon in the book of Revelation is found in Revelation 14:8. In the first thirteen chapters of the revelation there is no mention of Babylon, then, out of nowhere, it is recorded that “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city…” Why all of a sudden, out of nowhere, is she mentioned when the previous chapters spoke of the events happening upon the earth?

SHE ENCOMPASSES ALL CITIES

The second reference to Babylon is found in Revelation 16:19-20. She is again referred to as “the great city.” How great of a city is she? So great that “the cities of the nations fell,” and “every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”  Has there ever been a city throughout history that could make this statement? None. Not one. Only the earth has this distinction.

SHE IS A GREAT GLOBAL KILLER

The third reference to Babylon is found in Revelation 17:5. Here understanding is given to why all the judgment has come to Babylon, the earth: She was “drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” In the context of Revelation, this takes place on a global scale. Again, no city has ever had this global distinction. Again, we have to ask why is Babylon being spoken of when it is the earth being judged? The answer of course is because Mystery Babylon is the world system/spirit of the entire earth. Just as our spirit is not distinguished from our body, so is Mystery Babylon not inseparable from the earth.

SHE INFLUENCES ALL NATIONS

The fourth reference to Babylon is in Revelation 18:2-3, recording that “Babylon the great is fallen,” and has become home to actual demons, every bad spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hateful bird. It also records that every nation has taken part in her pleasures. Again, no city can make this claim at any time throughout history, though many try to parallel New York, America, Rome, or some other city or country.

SHE HAS AN HOUR OF JUDGMENT

The fifth reference to Babylon is found in Revelation 18:10, referencing Babylon’s “one hour” judgment. Again, God’s day and hour of wrath throughout Scripture refers to the earth’s hour of judgment, until we get to the book of Revelation. (Rev. 14:7; 3:10; Matt. 24:36) As we will see in the sixth reference, the present earth and  Babylon both cease to exist at the same time. Then, both, at the same time, usher us into our eternal life. These are not two separate events, one for the earth and one for Babylon; these are the same event. Babylon and the earth are the same in the same way that our body and spirit are one.

SHE WILL CEASE TO EXIST

The sixth and final reference to Babylon is found in Revelation 18:21 where it is recorded that Babylon will be judged in such a great way that she will no longer exist. Again, only our present earth has this distinction. Revelation 20:11 records that the “earth and the heaven fled away; and there was no place for them.” The Apostle Peter gives more details when he writes that: “Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness.”

These Scriptures are saying the same about the earth as Revelation 18:21 does  about Babylon. The day is coming when the present earth will  no longer exist. In my book, “Revelation and the Age of Antichrist,” I write:

“After these six verses, there is no further reference to Babylon. After the earth/Babylon is destroyed, the thousand-year millennium begins, the judgment of all people takes place, and the new heavens and the new earth are revealed. If Babylon were a literal physical city, God’s judgment would have come upon it alone, as it did upon Sodom and Gomorra—not upon the whole earth. Babylon is the spirit/system of the earth motivated by the Devil and sin and inseparable from what we know as the earth. That is why, when the Revelation speaks of the judgment of Babylon, it is the earth that we see being judged.”

If Babylon, a city or country, was being judged, the judgment would not have dissolved the earth and all things in it and ushered us into eternity. Babylon is the spirit/system, what we call the world. It is inseparable from the earth. When it is judged, all the earth is judged and suffers the same fate as Babylon.

It appears from God's perspective planet's are cities and galaxies are most likely countries. From this perspective, I live in the city Earth, in the country of the Milky Way.
